I updated my kitchen 2 years ago - it turned out lovely with white cabinets, my island was black
with butcher block top, the counters were quartz & dark quartz sink.
With an
optional butcher block top, this can work as a very useful kitchen island and recycling center rolled into one attractive unit.
Mine are white metal with
thick butcher block tops and are a bit larger than # 5 above and dirt cheap but really substantial.
Initially, they were thinking about doing a
huge butcher block top, but soon found out it would cost more than they wanted to spend.

a butcher block top that I'd love to stain a dark color but I've read elsewhere that you need a food safe stain.
One island was an old dresser that we fitted with
