The owl
butterfly is so named because of the enormous
eyespots that dominate its lower wings.
Moths chase single molecules of seemingly scentless pheromones, and a male satyrid
butterfly woos with the invisible (to us) ultraviolet on his
eyespot.
Some of these
butterfly pictures featured natural - looking
eyespots, others had none, and a third group showed digitally manipulated spots that had the same color contrast as real spots but looked less like eyes.
