I wasn't quite big enough for
maternity wear, so tried to solve my problem by
buying a handful of shift style dresses from Nordstrom in one size larger than what I normally
wear.
I tried VERY hard to
buy very little
maternity wear during pregnancy # 2.
Mom: Becky; New York, New York Lost: 54 pounds in 8 months I wouldn't let myself
buy any new clothing, so my choices were
maternity wear or pre-pregnancy
wear.
I waited longer than I should have to

maternity clothes, and spent a few months

buy new ones if you don't want to keep
wearing the
maternity ones.
You can
buy them online or at any store that sells

I try not to
buy too many
maternity items as you can't usually
wear them outside of being pregnant, s o it's always nice to have a list of items that will work for pregnancy (and being short waisted, I have the same problem with regular waistlines!)
The top I am

I splurged and
bought a pair of black
maternity jeans from Loft when they were on sale the other day and I'm hoping to find a dressy
maternity top to
wear with those.
I have
bought very few
maternity clothes during this pregnancy and people have been shocked at how many things I
wear that are non-
maternity.
If you aren't a fan of
buying a dress you are only going to
wear once, this is a great alternative to purchase cute cheap
maternity clothes!
Having a new baby on the way means you've got a lot of things to
buy in the near future, so you might be reluctant to splash out too much on loads of
maternity clothes you will only
wear for a few months.
I
bought a knee - length
maternity wedding dress, and
wore it last week on my wedding day.
These pictures were actually taken 2 weeks ago when it was a bit chilly in the morning but warm in the afternoon, so this blue Trapeze dress that I
bought when I was pregnant with my daughter (see what other «tricks» I did so I didn't have to
wear maternity clothes here) is just perfect for that kind of weather.

wear during my

I just
bought one of their delivery /
maternity robes and am excited to have something pretty and practical to
wear as I get huge.
Or if you have some of those mini dresses, you can use them as tops too (you'll look like you're
wearing tunics) and
wear them with shorts or leggings so you can avoid
buying maternity clothes.
Jason always laughs at me for
buying my clothes a size bigger than I need (he may have been right about the Mom jeans I purchased at the same time that are so roomy round the waist they're practically
maternity jeans...), but I'm adamant that the cut of this one was calling out to be
worn a bit slouchy and oversized.
I actually
bought a really nice (expensive) pair of
maternity dress pants for work (from a different well known brand) and
wore them three times before the seam on my butt ripped in the middle of my work day.
(probably because I
bought more than one pair of
maternity jeans, plus, the last two months of my pregnancy, I avoided
wearing jeans... I needed something way more comfy!)
Pictured below is the only
maternity dress I
bought (this one's from Target) and I have
worn the HECK out of it.
So I realize not everyone will have the weather to
wear a maxi dress when the bump is at its biggest, but while you can,
buy them and
wear them because they're something that will work later on so you don't have to
buy them from the
maternity section.
I'm not crazy about the idea of
buying lots of
maternity clothes, especially when I'll probably only
wear them for a couple months.
I
bought a couple skirt suits (the federal judge was an older woman who only permitted female attorneys to
wear skirt suits and hose... sigh) that were not
maternity, but a few sizes larger than my previous size.
I
wore mostly lounge clothes during
maternity leave, and
bought bigger regular clothes when I got back to work.
Buy ones that you can
wear post-
maternity and invest in some basic
maternity tops that match your suits that you can
wear late into your pregnancy.
I don't want to
buy clothes in my current size so I'm hanging on to the
maternity wear until I can fit into my old wardrobe.
I dug out a few sweaters and was thrilled to be reunited with this Old Navy Taylor Swift style Fox Sweater I had
bought (and
worn) while pregnant even thought it's not a
maternity piece.
Knowing that I have less than 3 months to go, I'm trying to get by with
buying too many
maternity clothes that I may never
wear again.
One of my favorite babywearing outfits is a purpley blue Gap
maternity wrap dress I
bought after I had my son - I've never even
worn it pregnant!
Leggings and tights became my go to with bodycons (from summer) and long tees (also from summer) So I never
bought a
maternity outfit again... except one grey bodycon that I
bought while NOT pregnant that I still
wear now... it has «
maternity» in the label ha!!
I
bought a few nice
maternity dresses that were also designed for nursing and never ended up
wearing them for the latter purpose — the first few weeks I didn't feel like dressing up, and within a few weeks they were so roomy in the stomach that they made me look pregnant again.
When I am
buying these
maternity dresses I always ask myself would you
wear this if you weren't pregnant because I want to be able to
wear these dresses postpartum (stay tuned if this is actually the case!).
My favorites are my Bravado bras, but I have a random nursing bra from Destination
Maternity or one of those mall stores that I
bought during my first pregnancy and still find myself
wearing if everything else is dirty.
(I did
buy a few more tops and warmer bottoms for my second pregnancy — those totaled $ 138 — but by and large I
wore my
maternity clothes from my first pregnancy.)
You're going to be amazed at a few things here: a) how cheap everything was — nothing designer, nothing fancy, all
bought on sale, b) how many pieces were gifted (usually by my mother sending me something in the mail), and c) how small my collection of
maternity clothes was, and d) how I still managed to spend almost $ 900 on
maternity clothes that were only
worn for about four months.
While pregnancy is completely different for everyone, I thought a few tips and ideas on
wearing non-
maternity clothes while pregnant would be helpful for any mamas out there that don't feel like
buying tons of
maternity clothes.
