Olek discusses her work featured in The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal, her current solo exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery.
At the Krause Gallery,
Olek is going farther with crochet than she could ever on the streets
by incorporating balloons into the mix and effectively making latex the new yarn.
Many works are directly inspired
by city life, such as
Olek's never before exhibited video from 2010 which documents her guerrilla style installation, crocheting fruit and vegetables that were then added to the produce selection at the historic Essex Street Market.
Part of
Olek's 50 - state public art project, Love Across the USA — which celebrates the accomplishments and voices of important women throughout US history — the final mural will be unveiled
by Mural Arts Philadelphia at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center on June 5.
The exhibition includes work
by Nancy Drew, Stephanie Homa,
Olek, Kikuko Tanaka and VanillaRoyal.
Visitors to Barnes on the Block will also have the opportunity to see the city's newest mural take shape as New York — based artist
Olek and her team begin stitching together the individual crochet squares — many crafted
by Philly residents — that will form a mural paying tribute to a Philadelphia woman.
Olek's art certainly has a way to bring attention to bikes, and
by extension, cycling culture in a city like NYC.
