These questions define the subject
matter of the study of divinity, and Christians have believed through the ages that these questions can be adequately answered only as each generation appropriates the
teaching passed on
by the original witnesses of God's self - revelation in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.
A true Christian makes prayer a daily
matter (1 Thess 5:17), in which Jesus
taught them to pray first and foremost for God's name of Jehovah to be sanctified
by means of his «kingdom».
Nevertheless, whatever loosening of religious demands or of theological orthodoxies may have taken place among dispersed Jews, Jewish nationalism continued unabated, and not until the highest levels of the prophetic
teaching had been released from it could religion become a
matter of free, personal choice, determined not
by racial stock or national allegiance but
by individual conviction
Each was held in a congregation, was
taught by a Candler faculty member and the church's pastor, and took as its subject
matter an actual issue or topic in that congregation's life.
25 We must be compelled
by a charity that rejoices in the truth26 and continues to hand on the received
teaching no
matter the cost.
Yet, such evidence is always contested and attacked
by those who will defend the church
teachings no
matter what.
As congregational leaders, do we preach and
teach that these
matters are
matters of faith or do we studiously avoid the appearance of meddling in politics
by feigning neutrality?
Thus, the universe being once fram'd
by God, and the laws of motion settled, and all upheld
by his perpetual concourse, and general providence; the same philosophy
teaches, that the phenomena of the world, are physically produced
by the mechanical properties of the parts of
matter; and, that they operate upon one another according to mechanical laws.
What the Bible MIGHT say, according to one or more interpretations
matters NOT to what is
taught by Preachers and understood
by their Flocks!
NCSCM's experience reveals that seminary professors are often profoundly shaken
by what they learn of ministry from interacting with our students, while many of our adjunct faculty, both clergy and lay, display superior
teaching skills and understanding of their subject
matter and contemporary ministry.
13 These things we also speak, not with words
taught by human wisdom, but with those
taught by [the] spirit, as we combine spiritual [
matters] with spiritual [words].
The rabbis who
taught in the synagogues held varied opinions on many
matters, but when we view them as a whole in their relation to non-Jewish developments and to heretical movements (such as Gnosticism), we are impressed

School - led prayer — Nope that would be an establishment of religion
Teaching Creationsism (no
matter by what name)-- Nope, establishment of religion.
Indeed, they make use of the
teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, who in this
matter wrongly adhered to the view held
by Aristotle, who was a zoologist as well as a philosopher.
Religion might
teach of duties and soften the inherent corruption of leaders and the governed alike, but the founders knew that the virtue of the nation was
by no means assured, no
matter what religious commitments its civic leaders might have.
Because our culture has for so long insidiously
taught citizens that the good life is measured
by their economic success and participation in the consumer society, it is small wonder so many believe that politics is a burden that conflicts with their pursuit of what really
matters.
Such a possibility opened out
by Scripture and the
teaching of faith is not simply immediately and self - evidently a
matter of course.
In some ways it's more a liturgical
matter than a theological one —
by modeling a predominantly narratival / typological rather than ahistorical / doctrinal approach to life, I've been able to pack a lot of
teaching into relatively few moments.
Enriched
by the diverse proposals on how theological
teaching might be done better, I put this book down still wondering about the «what» of the
matter.
Although a moderate theory of evolution is not objected to
by the
teaching Church at the present time, it does not follow that the theological question is thereby settled and that the whole
matter henceforward is a purely scientific one.
But the Christian scientist as such in his own sphere is bound as a
matter of principle and method
by the Church's magisterium as the higher and more comprehensive authority, in the sense that even as a scientist he may not affirm as established with certainty
by his science something which would involve a definite contradiction of a doctrine
taught officially
by the Church as certain (Denzinger 1656, 1674 ff., 1681, 2085).
The aim was consciously ecumenical, following the directive laid down
by Pope John XXIII for the Church to make clear its
teachings in those essential
matters so as to make itself more understandable to the separated Churches of the Orthodox and the ecclesial communities of the Reformation.
Recall now the evidence, illustrated previously
by Niebuhr's discussion of the current theological concern with the resurrection narrative in the New Testament: that
teaching and preaching have not done with this
matter.
He formulates it as follows: «
By a process of elimination we are left with twenty - one sayings whose attestation and subject
matter do not give rise to objections of weight, which are perfectly compatible with the genuine
teachings of our Lord, and which have as high a claim to authenticity as the sayings recorded in our four gospels.
No good purpose is served
by concealing this fact, as is often done today when things that are really incompatible are combined
by the following type of over-simplified reasoning: that whatever in early Christian
teaching appears to us irreconcilable with the immortality of the soul, viz. the resurrection of the body, is not an essential affirmation for the first Christians but simply an accommodation to the mythological expressions of the thought of their time, and that the heart of the
matter is the immortality of the soul.
I thought it was enormously telling how many people were disgusted with an ambiguous three - word tweet
by John Piper but essentially yawned at Bell's false
teaching on a
matter of eternal importance.
Unlike God's work and
teachings in this later era, where compassion and kindness for one's fellow man are the whole of the law (
by word, but more importantly, in example after example, that when we think we know God's law and set forth to make prey on our fellows using it as our succor, that indeed, no
matter the crime, the answer is to treat each other with dignity, humility and love).
Generis: «For these reasons the
Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living
matter - for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created
by God» [italics added].
The fact is that that
teaching has been severely and unjustifiably truncated
by ATIA with little offered in the ATIA text to justify the full
teaching of the Church on this important and controversial
matter.
In spite of this, we catch a glimpse of women and men, responding to what they sensed was a new movement inaugurated
by a man from Galilee, a man who tried to break so many of the social conventions of his time, a response informed
by the possibility of change and transformation, even though what he «actually
taught often became a
matter of bitter dispute....»
In these
matters we have shown some ability to be
taught by experience.
It is so funny that people think all Christians are these gay hating people who hate everyone except Christians lol If you live
by Jesus's
teachings you love everyone no
matter who they are.
It may well be said
by many that, «whoever has the most toys wins» but I say to all, «There are far too few winners and way too many losers in Life, so be that which you adorn to and cling ever closely to your spirited heart - felt
teachings no
matter the cost for living here among our Life's Tree of Celestial Cosmologies!»
When a bishop acts in persona Christi, fulfilling his duty to
teach on
matters of faith and morals
by identifying propositions to which he calls upon the faithful to assent, he presumably means to state truths that belong to one and the same body of truths: primarily, those entrusted
by Jesus to his Church and, secondarily, those necessary to preserve the primary truths as inviolable and / or to expound them with fidelity.
I've listened to my sisters grieve over how they never knew how to say no when they were approached
by sexual predators, because they didn't know they had the basic human right to do so after being
taught things like first - time obedience and assuming the best about those in authority no
matter what (because God put them in authority, so they have inside info on God's will).
William of Occam recognized the authority of the Church in spiritual
matters and said that, although they can not be proved, such tenets of Christianity as the existence of God and the immortality of the soul must be believed because they are
taught by the Church and the Bible.
Pope Pius XII declared that «the
teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions... take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living
matter --[but] the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created
by God» (Pius XII, Humani Generis 36)»
But Crossan too disabuses Jesus of expecting divine intervention to bring the kingdom, and claims not only that Jesus became «almost the exact opposite of the Baptist» but also that Jesus
taught a present sapiential kingdom, though as understood not
by elites (like Wisdom of Solomon or Philo) but
by peasants, whose dream of an egalitarian world was a
matter of social protest.
