At Cuchifritos, the collective will host Edición Especial, a special iteration of Sweety's Radio that focuses on Spanish - speaking cultural producers, as a means to bridge the conversations taking place amongst black and brown (Spanish - speaking) communities in and outside of the U.S.. And, surprisingly enough, many of these artists were connected to the Abstract Expressionist movement (the most sought - after segment in the art market) to one extent or another: a Washington D.C. - based artist Sam Gilliam was brought by David Kordansky Gallery to Frieze Art Fair in New York this year, an active member of the famous New York School Edward Dugmore was exhibited at Loretta Howard gallery just recently, and now it is Raymond Spillenger, an Abstract Expressionist who is gaining attention with an upcoming retrospective scheduled for early 2016 at the Black Mountain College near Asheville, N.C. Spillenger, who died in November at the age of 89, abruptly left the art scene in the late 6os, and while his fellow AbEx artists were going through mounting recognition and success at the Stable Annual, Spillenger plunged into family life and didn't show his art even to the family members.

As a cross-disciplinary artist, Gates» expresses his meaningful and empowering works through an array of artistic practices including painting, sculpture, audio, and performance art.The title of the exhibition references The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois», a publication considered among the most important work in African American literary history and sociology.
Lubaina Himid has dedicated much of her professional and curatorial life to making Black artists and specifically Black female artists more visible, but here in Hull she is very literally representing Black lives, by for example overpainting porcelain dinnerware with the images of slaves that would have been the ones using them to serve food, or by isolating racist stereotypes in newspaper clippings from the Guardian, or through her larger than life cut - outs of Black servants in A Fashionable Marriage.

Recent Paintings by Wini Brewer will feature new works by the Los Angeles based artist whose vibrant works infuse abstract and representational elements through a unique process of layering colorful acrylics against black and white graphics.
