This major touring exhibition organized
by the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC) examines the shifting identity of American self - taught
artists and offers an unprecedented overview of their profound impact
on the evolution of modern and
contemporary art.
The exhibition is co-organized
by testsite and The
Contemporary Austin and opens at testsite
on Sunday, May 3rd with a public reception from 4 to 6 pm and an
artists - curators talk at 4:30 pm.
The series is part of APF's Works
on Whatever (WOW) series: a unique collection of everyday items designed
by artists with sales supporting APF's non-profit mission to engage the public and expand the audience for
contemporary art.

An auction led
by Oliver Barker of Sotheby's and introduced
by Alex Sainsbury featured work donated
by leading
artists in homage to Richard Long, including Matthew Darbyshire's glittering gold leaf bollard, Long's friend and
contemporary Hamish Fulton's work reminiscing
on a 1960s performance
by the
artist, and Michael Rakowitz's reinterpretation of Long's iconic A Line Made
by Walking with A Line Made from Looting.
The work is called «Jack Lemmon,» and it was made last year
by Rachel Harrison, a brilliant
artist in her mid-40s who lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y.. It's
on display in the permanent collection galleries at the Institute of
Contemporary Art,
on long - term loan from the benefactor Barbara Lee.
The off - site public program engages the city's long legacy with public art, including IN / SITU Outside, siting works
by major
contemporary artists throughout Chicago Park District locations for up to one year, and OVERRIDE A Billboard Project, presenting a curated selection of digital art
on the citywide network.
On view October 22, 2016 — January 22, 2017, this exhibition surveys the state of representational painting at the beginning of the 21st century and features approximately 40 works
by 20
contemporary realist
artists from throughout the United States and Canada.
While necessary discussions were had, this was also a shame, because it sucked most of the attention from the truly staggering range of work
on view
by contemporary artists.
