Some sixty works by seven artists are presented, including French surrealist Pierre Roy (1880 - 1950), a major influence on Cornell (1903 - 1972); Leo Rabkin (b. 1919), one of the few survivors of native surrealism; and several contemporary artists, such as Lucas Samaras (b. 1936), Elspeth Halvorsen (b. 1929), Maureen McCabe (b. 1947), and Ted Victoria (b. 1944).

Since 2012, Magnolia Editions has published an ongoing series of archival watercolor prints by Close which use the artist's grid format and the precision afforded by contemporary digital printers to layer water - based pigment on Hahnemuhle rag paper [31] such that the native behavior of watercolor is manifested in each print: «The edges of each pixel bleed with cyan, magenta, and yellow, creating a kind of three - dimensional fog effect behind the intended color swatches.»

The Cumberland County native is also the first African American contemporary artist to have his work (Batman, 1979) included in the widely - used reference book The History of Art by H.W. Janson.

Organized by the DAM and curated by John Lukavic, curator of Native Arts, the exhibition will chronicle a pivotal moment in the artist's career when his contemporary artistic practice converged with his Native American heritage.

Focusing on contemporary art by artists currently living in, or native to, the state of North Carolina.

The exhibition is organized by Crystal Bridges and curated by independent curator Candice Hopkins (Tlingit, citizen of Carcross / Tagish First Nation), Crystal Bridges Curator of American Art, Mindy Besaw, and Manuela Well - Off - Man, Chief Curator at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The first project to explore the visual art, poetry and music of one of America's most inventive yet under - recognized contemporary Native American artists, this exhibition will survey Cannon's highly productive but short career; his development of a unique and hybrid visual vocabulary; and his combination of irony and wit with a reverence for community and tradition to interrogate American history and popular culture; as well as the issues wrought by colonialism, hegemony, and historical amnesia — all through his Native lens.

A native of Korea, Okkyung Lee has been developing her own voice in contemporary cello performance, improvisation and composition for more than a decade by blending her wide interests and influences.

Influenced by the skate and surf culture of his native Virginia Beach, and educated in graphic design and art theory, Ryan McGinness has developed a diverse practice that translates the symbolic language of mass culture into the arena of contemporary art, proposing his universal iconography for our information age.

Varejão was inspired by a 2012 book, also titled Kindred Spirits, which elaborates on the connections between Native American visual culture and the work of modern and contemporary artists.

Varejão will include works from her two most recent series: Kindred Spirits, 29 portraits of the artist donning the face painting and body ornamentation of Native American tribes intermixed with markings derived from artworks by Minimalist and contemporary American artists, and the Mimbres paintings, which reference the visual culture of the Mimbres people who inhabited the American Southwest in the 11th century.

A wide range of art acquisitions — including a rare post-World War II modernist painting, important Native American objects, a collaborative work by two contemporary African American artists, and a site - specific glass installation — led VMFA's year - end acquisitions.

Curated by John Lukavic, associate curator of native arts, this exhibition is part of the Denver Art Museum's initiative to expand the recognition of contemporary art by American Indian artists.
