Some sixty works by seven artists are presented, including French surrealist Pierre Roy (1880 - 1950), a major influence on Cornell (1903 - 1972); Leo Rabkin (b. 1919), one of the few survivors of native surrealism; and several contemporary artists, such as Lucas Samaras (b. 1936), Elspeth Halvorsen (b. 1929), Maureen McCabe (b. 1947), and Ted Victoria (b. 1944).
Since 2012, Magnolia Editions has published an ongoing series of archival watercolor prints by Close which use the artist's grid format and the precision afforded by contemporary digital printers to layer water - based pigment on Hahnemuhle rag paper [31] such that the native behavior of watercolor is manifested in each print: «The edges of each pixel bleed with cyan, magenta, and yellow, creating a kind of three - dimensional fog effect behind the intended color swatches.»
The Cumberland County native is also the first African American contemporary artist to have his work (Batman, 1979) included in the widely - used reference book The History of Art by H.W. Janson.

Varejão will include works from her two most recent series: Kindred Spirits, 29 portraits of the artist donning the face painting and body ornamentation of Native American tribes intermixed with markings derived from artworks by Minimalist and contemporary American artists, and the Mimbres paintings, which reference the visual culture of the Mimbres people who inhabited the American Southwest in the 11th century.
