In cooking, it's what is usually meant by browning.
Cook and stir 1 to 2 minutes or until browned bits attached to skillet are dissolved and sauce is reduced by half.
Working in batches, add kale and cook until softened and slightly browned, adding additional oil by tablespoonfuls if dry.
For years I have watched Alton Brown and listened to him lecture about how cooking by weight is always better but I never converted.
