Smaller galaxies would have a weaker gravitational hold on this material, so they could end up
dominated by dark matter, which would be unaffected by the explosions.
The actual announcement was disappointing, however: just two pulses were detected over almost a year, and they might have been
caused by dark matter.
Citing the case of a dim object called Willman 1, he says: «If we could unambiguously say that it is held
together by dark matter, nobody would debate if it is a galaxy.»
«But there has been the possibility it could decay through new particles
predicted by dark matter theories, such as supersymmetry.
That match, with only a 1 - in - 100,000 chance of being caused by a statistical error, virtually eliminates any possibility that B - sub-s meson decay is related to interaction with particles predicted
by dark matter theories, as some physicists have suspected.
Finkbeiner speculates the source may be electrons given off
by dark matter in our galaxy or extraneous emission that accompanied the release of the microwave background in the primordial universe.
If the new force does exist, we might soon be able to see its effects on things
influenced by dark matter, such as the behaviour of black holes or the masses of the first stars, says Douglas Finkbeiner of Harvard University, who was not involved in the new study.
It is able to look for even higher - energy electrons and positrons, numbers of which should suddenly drop off if they are caused
by dark matter annihilations, but not if caused by pulsars.
What's more, the visible stuff of galaxies is
dwarfed by dark matter, and each galaxy is racing away from the others due to an even more mysterious entity: dark energy.
Assuming the results are right, there are a few theories to explain how galaxies like NGC 1052 - DF2 could come together
untouched by dark matter's hidden hand.
Perhaps just as incredible, the clouds of hot interstellar gas formerly contained by the galaxies — and superheated by the collision so they glow in x-ray light — seem to have been
grabbed by the dark matter instead of being flung into space.
A further complicating factor is that craters are formed by comet and asteroid impacts, but only comets originate in the Oort cloud and so are far enough out to be
diverted by dark matter.
These measurements showed that the visible matter only accounts for a fraction of the total weight, the predominant part is
delivered by dark matter.
The «flattening» of galaxy rotation speeds, discovered by the astronomer Vera Rubin in the 1970s, is widely considered to be Exhibit A in the case for dark matter — explained, in that paradigm,
by dark matter clouds or «halos» that surround galaxies and give an extra gravitational acceleration to their outlying stars.
The results are consistent with the modulation in signals first recorded more than a decade
ago by the DArk MAtter / Large sodium Iodide Bulk for RAre processes (DAMA / LIBRA) experiment at Gran Sasso, Italy.
Her hometown of Mumbai was
ravaged by a dark matter plague and she joined to help her vow for revenge on LEGION while searching for a cure.
Peter Blake's 3D Circus was produced and
published by Dark Matter Studio in 2013 and the last few in the edition are available through One Church Street Gallery.
In typical galaxies, normal matter is
swamped by dark matter, an unidentified invisible substance that makes up most of the matter in the universe.
The dark matter distribution was measured by the weak gravitational lensing of the light from visible
galaxies by the dark matter (see the relativity chapter).
Again, we assume that we do not live at a special time, so to have kept the very fast moving particles around, there needs to be extra gravity
supplied by the dark matter.
Ever - more detailed studies of the cosmic microwave background support the picture of a cosmos that began in an inflationary big bang
dominated by dark matter and dark energy
The remaining six are thought to be globular clusters, which are similar to dwarf galaxies but are not held
together by dark matter.
Photomultiplier tubes within the detector, shown above, detect light produced in interactions possibly
caused by dark matter particles.
Whether the variations are caused
by dark matter or something else, however, remains unclear.
«The Big Bang model sets the initial conditions for structure formation and explains our presence in an expanding universe dominated
by dark matter and energy.»
