It remains to be seen whether the political turn in contemporary art suggested by the recent Whitney Biennial and Documenta 14 in Athens translates into the commercial context of Art Basel.

Summer tends to be a relatively quiet season art-wise, but this year major international events — Venice Biennale, Documenta 14, and Art Basel — are coinciding with compelling gallery and museum exhibitions featuring works by black artists.

Other Documenta remnants (mainly sculptures) can be found in many places in Kassel; among those the «7000 Oaks», a work of land art by the German artist Joseph Beuys.

He also participated in many international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (1958, 1988 and 1990); the Pittsburgh International, where he received the Carnegie Prize for sculpture in 1964 and, in 1978, shared the Andrew W. Mellon Prize with Willem de Kooning; and Documenta His first comprehensive retrospective in the United States was mounted by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 1966.

Supported by Jean Leering, director of the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, his work was also included in seminal exhibitions such as the 1967 Biennal of São Paolo together with Jan Schoonhoven and Peter Struycken and the Documenta 4 in Kassel in 1968, in a gallery room shared with Elsworth Kelly.

Spanning 1962 - 2002, 25 exhibitions that have contributed to shifts in modes of perception, presentation and the practice of art have been selected for investigation, from Dylaby at the Stedelijk Museum in 1962, featuring work by Robert Rauschenberg, Niki de Saint Phalle and others, to Documenta 11 in 2002, curated by Okwui Enwezor and a team of co-curators.

As a result of the Documenta 6 (1977), Kassel became the first town in the world to be illuminated by laser beams at night (Laserscape, by artist Horst H. Baumann).

In 1968, she went to Documenta, an international art show in Germany, and was bowled over by the freshness and originality of the work on display by a new generation of artists seeking to come to terms with their nation's past.
