Pediatricians can strive to identify and build on protective factors within
families, such as
cohesion, humor, support networks, skills, and spiritual and cultural beliefs.96, 97
By approaching
families from a strengths - based perspective, pediatricians can help build trust and identify the assets on which a
family can draw to effectively address problems and care for their children.
In the studies of early childhood, most of which focussed on mother — child interactions, maternal BPD was associated with reduced sensitivity and increased intrusivity towards the child.13, 20 — 22 This is, perhaps, not surprising, given the finding that mothers with BPD found it difficult to correctly identify emotions in photographs of both their own and strangers» children.26 Mothers with BPD also found it more difficult to structure their young child's activities, 13 and in later childhood were rated as having poorer levels of
family organisation.17 The
family environment where mothers had BPD was characterised
by high levels of hostility, 17, 29 and low levels of
cohesion, 17 according to both parent and child reportings.
These children do well across a range of physical, psychological and educational outcomes and, interestingly, children raised
by same - sex parents actually fared better on measures of general behaviour, general health and
family cohesion.
Results indicate at 6 - month follow - up, reductions were reported in substance use and substance use - related risk factors, as evidenced
by modest improvements in

Research has shown that a
family climate that is particularly conducive to promoting good medical adjustment to diabetes is not only marked
by a high degree of
