That temperature change will be considerable amplified by the greenhouse effect of water vapour due to the greater humidity at the higher temperature.

The ongoing warming trend — as well as the increasing frequency and severity of high - humidity heat waves — is ultimately driven by rising concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The rains, at least meteorologically speaking, were not unexpected; the combination of slow - moving, low - pressure tropical air mass fed by high sea surface temperatures, and record humidity — in addition to the unpredictability of climate change — make catastrophic floods more likely.

Even in areas where precipitation does not decrease, these increases in surface evaporation and loss of water from plants lead to more rapid drying of soils if the effects of higher temperatures are not offset by other changes (such as reduced wind speed or increased humidity).5 As soil dries out, a larger proportion of the incoming heat from the sun goes into heating the soil and adjacent air rather than evaporating its moisture, resulting in hotter summers under drier climatic conditions.6

And, since IPCC assumed essentially constant relative humidity with warming to arrive at the water vapor feedback and it appears that RH decreases with warming (Minschwaner + Dessler 2005, NOAA radiosonde and satellite humidity records), the water vapor feedback is very likely too high by around 0.3 C to 0.6 C, bringing the overall adjusted ECS to roughly 0.9 C to 1.2 C.
