This hugemountain
lake is not frozen, as we had hoped; we could have shortened our routeby 20 miles
by crossing the

The Great
Lakes were shaped
by ice ages that sent glaciers sweeping over much of the northern hemisphere.
And at high global latitudes, cold
lakes normally covered
by ice in the winter are seeing less
ice year after year — a change that could affect all parts of the food web, from algae to freshwater seals.
It quickly became clear that this was an environment sealed away from the earth's surface, and although the water in the
lake may itself be slowly changed out
by the deep -
ice dynamics of Antarctica, this process could take well over 10,000 years.
The researchers propose that, unlike in Antarctica where surface temperatures remain below freezing all year round, the newly discovered
lakes are most likely fed
by melting surface water draining through cracks in the
ice.
The apparent absence of
lakes in Greenland had previously been explained
by the fact that steeper
ice surface in Greenland leads to any water below the
ice being «squeezed out» to the margin.
For instance, researchers may have a limited time to survey coastal archaeological sites threatened
by erosion, to sample melting
ice sheets holding clues to past climates, and to document so - called thermokarst
lakes, which are formed
by meltwater from permafrost.
That's important — changing sea
ice, changing
lake ice, changing snow cover, increasing shrubs — but I wanted the book to enrich that picture,
by describing those changes through the human lives that experience them.
The
lakes and channels are undetectable
by human senses, since they lie beneath half a mile of
ice.
As Tulaczyk watched the Herc on Jan. 17, 2013, the

by rivers that form when melting
ice expands the
lakes, increasing pressure under the
ice cap and causing underground channels of water and mud to squirt out.
Researchers speculate that primitive life could eke out an existence there, subsisting on a bare minimum of dissolved organic carbon — a notion bolstered
by the recent discovery of bacteria within refrozen
ice in a core drilled to 100 meters above the

by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, and the University of California, Irvine, shows that while
ice sheets and glaciers continue to melt, changes in weather and climate over the past decade have caused Earth's continents to soak up and store an extra 3.2 trillion tons of water in soils,
lakes and underground aquifers, temporarily slowing the rate of sea level rise
by about 20 percent.

lake sites in Europe, there seems to be a reaction that tracks the changes in the
ice cores
by as little as a decade and at most a couple of hundred years.

lakes while looking for subglacial continents in the Devon
Ice Cap.
These
lakes occur as a result of geothermal heat trapped
by the thick

ice above, which lowers the melting point of water.
Additional data often mapped
by satellite and added to glacier inventories include changing
ice debris cover20, rock glaciers21, equilibrium line altitude22, grounding zones23 and glacial
lake extent24, 25.

Lakes were carved
by ice deepening old valleys.
If more
ice is lost at the margins than gained at the core, the
ice sheet shrinks, ultimately affecting albedo as (depending on the underlying geography)
lakes form, some rockbed is exposed and areas are reconquered
by the ocean.

Previous reports of microbes from other
lakes under the Antarctic
ice have met skepticism, due to the possibility of contamination
by surface microbes.
When combined with pressure and elevation, this «pumping» action of
ice can be an extremely effective rehabilitation tool (and you can observe this in nature
by simply jumping into a cold
lake for about 20 minutes and watching your skin slowly turn red as reactive vasodilation occurs).
