So we asked in our research: What would happen if current low natural gas prices or pollution control policies caused all US coal - burning power plants to be replaced
by natural gas generators?

Power
generators are turning away from coal for a host of reasons: In some instances
natural gas is cheaper; many states are requiring utilities to generate a certain portion of electricity from renewable resources; individual cities (and even an entire Canadian province) have decided to stop purchasing electricity created
by burning coal; and new Environmental Protection Agency regulations are making it more expensive and less economical to use coal plants.
By necessity, conventional firm capacity
generators: nuclear, biomass,
natural gas, hydropower, etc. will remain the primary suppliers of electricity to the New England grid well into the future.
The plants join a series of
generators recently stricken
by financial pressure primarily
by competition from cheap
natural gas, expanding renewable capacity, and lethargic power demand growth.
Generation fueled
by natural gas and petroleum supplemented the baseload
generators during peak and intermediate periods of demand.
Environmentally, U.S. energy - related carbon dioxide emissions in 2015 were 12 percent below 2005 levels, mainly due to the increased use of
natural gas by power
generators.
CaISO has developed a report on the topic, including a plan to ensure reliability, for example
by upping procurement of regulation and ramping services, coordinating with other
generators in advance of the eclipse, increasing coordination with
gas system operators to ensure sufficient
natural gas supply, and other actions.
The newest coal - fired
generator in the state, the enormous Unit 6 at the Rogers Energy Complex in Cliffside, is being converted to run flexibly on either coal or
gas, while coal - fired Unit 5 was excluded
by the UCS analysis because it is being converted to run partially on
natural gas, but would also fail the economic stress test compared to
natural gas and wind.
Due to an increase in demand for
natural gas for space and water heating, and limitations imposed
by natural gas pipeline constraints, electricity generation from
gas was unable to scale up, and the burden was transferred to oil as dual fuel
generators switched over.
Coal rose

natural gas fuelled

generators by 26 %.

Baseload power (i.e. coal and nuclear) interests that are being edged out

When wind farms are not generating the electricity deficit can be taken up
by other
generators such as
natural gas - fired power stations.
Over that period, it projects that electricity
generators will see their emissions fall
by 31 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, largely as a result of coal - fired plants giving way to
natural gas - fired power.
And as demonstrated at the Princeton University microgrid, a
natural gas turbine
generator can react and respond quickly to an unforeseen voltage sag caused
by a dense cloud passing over a 4.5 MW solar farm.
