We were told that in addition to the main
quest, there are many
optional side missions that players can partake in
by talking to various NPCs, like Crazy Joe from the demo.
Clearly what happened is that in testing, a lot of players gave up there, so rather than making the fortress
optional (which would have made perfect sense, since there's an entire other mini-dungeon that you unlock
by getting through there - an excellent reward for a
side -
quest), they decided to just make the Hookshot act as a cheat code, letting everyone beat the level at the expense of letting anyone actually enjoy it.
This is backed up
by all sorts of little touches, too, like an
optional side quests where you can participate (for a surprisingly long time!)
The majority of the game's
side quests,
optional bosses, and Espers are found
by working through the game's many hunts.
There are two types of favors to complete — you can take bigger
side -
quests to
optional, dungeon - like environments
by talking to Sindri and Brok, you blacksmith pals that appear everywhere you go in the main story.
Aside from a few short cutscenes, the player mainly finds out more about the story, world and characters
by reading item descriptions,
side quests and
optional text scattered around.
