Works from the Cantor's permanent collection are presented alongside and in juxtaposition with contemporary works loaned by private individuals and galleries, organized around ideas of artistic inspiration and source material, the role of a preliminary study, the significance of place, the influence of technology and globalization on creation, etc..
Support for the Museum's collection, exhibitions, publications, and education programs is provided by grants from public and private agencies, individual contributions, the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art and its Board of Directors, the Purchase College Foundation, the State University of New York.
To what extent the private individual can be separated from the culture that spawned them is one of the abiding questions thrown up by Jim Shaw's work.
The Award is generously supported by the Sfumato Foundation, and is the latest initiative from the Contemporary Art Society; charity that supports contemporary artists by promoting the importance of collecting and commissioning by public and private bodies and individuals nationally within the broader international context for contemporary art.
