Seekers spent hours praying to be baptized with the Holy Spirit, an experience they expected would be attested
by speaking in tongues.
The doctrine of subsequent baptism in the Spirit, as evidenced
by speaking in tongues, is the classic Pentecostal belief.
On Easter Sunday 1960, Dennis Bennett, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal in Van Nuys, CA revealed to his parish that he had experienced what he described as a second baptism of the Spirit, accompanied
by speaking in tongues.
The Pentecostal idea of a «second blessing,» marked
by speaking in tongues, has now returned to influence American churches of every stripe in the form of the charismatic movement.
Among white Pentecostals the pressure comes from the charismatics, who are shedding certain classical Pentecostal doctrines, particularly «the baptism of the Holy Spirit» and its being «evidenced»
by speaking in tongues.

This forged passage above is,
by the way, where the evangelical tradition of «
speaking in tongues,» the Appalachian tradition of snake handling and the Christian Science tradition of healing through «laying of hands» all come from — and it's a complete forgery.
Those who believe will
speak in tongues and be unaffected
by poisons and will be able to handle snakes and heal the sick
by the mere laying of their hands.
When I hear people disparaging symbolic undergarments, I realize that they would do the same to Jewish and Catholic ceremonial garb, as well as the outwardly dramatic group reactions displayed
by Evangelicals including,

in their lives.

• Fact # 2: One of the more controversial discussions
in their movement is the desire
by some (particularly the reformists) to downplay what others consider a central Pentecostal distinctive — that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit manifests itself with the «initial physical evidence» of
speaking in tongues.
It is profitable to observe the uses of rhetoric made
by scholars from the different fields, although each does
speak in a
tongue perhaps best understood
by members of the same scholarly community.

The lines are also blurred
by large segments of Pentecostalism (especially
in the south and among blacks) that are also «Holiness»
in that they teach «three works of grace» — conversion, entire sanctification and a «baptism
in the Spirit» with

Unless they have repented of their sins, been baptised
in the name of Jesus, and filled with the Holy Spirit as evidenced
by speaking in another language (
tongues) as stated
by Peter on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:38), they are not born again.
To make a long story short,

speaking in tongues, jumping up and down
in the spirit.

Whether they do it accidentally or intentionally, issues like paedobaptism or
speaking in tongues are easily caricatured
by people who don't understand them or who chose not to practice them.
Apparently, the only person acting is Brown who, backed
by the organ strains of an old - time gospel song, seems to relish the role of
speaking in tongues, casting out demons and slaying people
in the spirit.
I
speak in tongues by the Holy Spirit....
Pentecostals wrestled with the conundrums presented
by alcohol - imbibing, dancing, «worldly» Lutherans and Catholics
speaking in tongues and being slain
in the Spirit.
Taking the verse «And these signs will follow those who believe:

tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will
by no means hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.»
The Azusa Street Revival, led
by William Seymour from 1906 to 1915, propelled this movement and included
speaking in tongues, healing, and prophecy.
Article 8 of the «Statement of Fundamental Truths» of the General Council of the Assemblies of God states, «The baptism of believers
in the Holy Ghost is witnessed
by the initial physical sign of
speaking with other
tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4).»
People aren't Pentecostal just because they
speak in tongues, they are Pentecostal because the trajectory of their entire lives has been re-oriented
by the power of the Spirit.
Not one was able to do what
tongues was
by a gift,
speak in a foreign
tongue.
Key to understanding this culture are a pair of verses from the Gospel of Mark
in the New Testament: «And these signs will follow those who believe:
in My name they will cast out demons; they will
speak with new
tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will
by no means hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.»
I would like to stay around for the
speaking in tongues, should it occur, but the mosquitoes, worked into a frenzy
by all this talk of His blood, are launching a full - scale attack.
Rather, the gift of
tongues becomes a gift of
speaking in other languages so that people from throughout the world could hear «the mighty works of God» (2:11) Even that miraculous event remains incomplete and misunderstood until it is interpreted
by the apostolic preaching.
Luke's lesson that the Spirit is a gift for proclamation is reinforced
by the other two occasions
in Acts where
speaking in tongues is reported.
Neither is it revealed
by some sort of spiritual manifestations like being slain
in the spirit or
speaking in tongues or laughing hysterically.
For what it's worth: a great epiphanic revelation when I realized all the «love» talk
by Paul
in Corintheans (move mountains,
speak in tongues, etc) described what I did not have — not what I might have if I just asked for it.
Charismatics
