That this first step is an error is indicated
by Searle himself in his allusion to the bipolar (private and public) character of conscious
awareness, which prompts one to ask whether most scientific approaches to the problem of consciousness are vitiated at the outset
by a failure to leave open the possibility of an indissociable bipolarity in key ideas (such as public - private,
subjective - objective, and body - mind).
