Cyril, with her quick, neat strides, simple pearls, and classically elegant work attire, is the genius
of Phantom Thread, not because she is a
great artist (though her taste, held in high esteem
by her brother, is impeccable) but, rather, because she knows how to handle one.

great performances across the board
by Christian Bale (whose combover alone deserves some kind
of award) and Amy Adams as the con
artists, Bradley Cooper as the fed who is as tightly coiled as his perm and Jeremy Renner as a politician who falls into their trap out
of a genuine desire to help his constituents but the whole thing was stolen outright
by Jennifer Lawrence as Bale's wife, a live wire whose innately direct nature is enough to blow the entire deal in an instant, in what may be the best performance to date
of her already incredible career.
The most interesting revelation is that while the film's spectacular visuals were crafted with
great care
by the directors and
artists, perhaps the most attention was paid to the acting performances
of their drawn characters.
Green Room is a rare gift from the genre gods: a nasty, punk - as - fuck midnight movie made
by a genuine
artist, a filmmaker with a
great eye and a true understanding
of the people and places he's splattering in viscera.
