The alert, issued
by the international organization that was greatly bolstered following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, said that
tidal gauges confirmed that a tsunami was generated.
We define nuisance flooding as occurring when the water level at a NOAA
tidal gauge exceeds the local threshold for minor flooding impacts that has been established
by the local Weather Forecasting Offices (WFO) of the National Weather Service (NWS).
However, as we have seen throughout this section, the
tidal gauge estimates the IPCC used to estimate global sea level trends are contaminated
by local trends, such as tectonic activity, post-glacial rebound... and the coastal subsidence that Syvitski et al. identified!

tidal gauge data for certain cities around the world, and you claim that sea level rise and acceleration are disproved
by those few
gauges.
In south Florida, the pace of sea level rise at local
tidal gauges,
by last year, had gone exponential.
The argument is that the SLR is greater than measured
by the coastal
tidal gauges because of land movements.
A good scientist would have issued a correction something along the lines of «I missed the fact that
tidal gauges are influenced strongly
by local changes in land elevation due to river silt, human activity, post-ice age rebound, and earthquakes.
My conclusions about the
tidal gauges might be affected
by these effects, so I withdraw my sea level rise claim until such time as I've verified my conclusions.»
Firstly, the Australian National
Tidal Facility (which installed and monitored the tide
gauges starting in 1991) used to be managed
by Flinders University in Adelaide — but the facility was transferred to the National
Tidal Centre run
by the Bureau of Meteorology... in 2003!
