They each spoke from experience about the suffering and danger caused
by use of the gas chambers and the much safer, humane method of euthanasia, lethal injection.
There is an issue at hand that needs immediate attention, it is concerning the way in which we discard animals who are left homeless from irresponsible owners, and end up in rabies control or animal shelters and killed
by the use of a gas chamber.

by use of a decompression

New York (would mandate euthanasia
by injection or EBI), Pennsylvania (would also ban chloroform, ether, halothan, fluothane, or similar substance when
used in an airtight
chamber or plastic bag, North Carolina (would mandate EBI), Georgia (EBI mandated already for dogs and cats and bill would close loopholes that allow many counties to continue to
use CO
gas; the bill would allow heartstick only if the animal is unconscious, heavily sedated or comatose), West Virginia (would ban new Co
gas chambers), New Mexico, Louisiana (would ban CO
chambers for dogs and cats and also ban heartstick unless the «animal is unconscious or rendered completely unconscious and insensitive to pain through the injection
of an anesthetic») and Michigan (would also ban CO2).
While many shelters practice humane euthanasia
by injection
of approved drugs, some still
use the
gas chamber.
The legislation also standardizes holding times for stray dogs, prohibits the
use of gas chambers for euthanizing dogs and cats, and creates a spay / neuter program, funded
by a voluntary tax check off, that is designed to reduce the number
of homeless animals in Massachusetts.
The bill would ban the
use of the cruel
gas chamber, ban the excruciatingly painful method
of killing
by heart sticking, prohibit shelters from killing animals when there are empty cages, make it illegal to kill animals when rescue groups are willing to save them, and end the practice
of killing «owner surrendered» animals within minutes
of arrival without ever giving them a chance at adoption.

The plaintiffs in the case, Morton and Robinson, asked the court for an injunction, to require the state to comply with the law and stop issuing licenses to any new shelters that would
use gas chambers and to refuse to renew licenses
of current shelters that kill animals
by illegally gassing them.
HB 4844 would also extend euthanasia restrictions to commercial breeders, and stop the
use of homemade
gas chambers by private enterprises according to Ledy VanKavage
of the ASPCA as quoted in the Pantagraph.
The county will continue to
use CO
gas chambers for these animals, but Gaston County Commissioner Allan Fraley has said if he doesn't see an increase in the numbers
of animals euthanized
by lethal injection, he will ask the commission to prohibit
use of the CO
gas chamber altogether.
By way
of update, Lee County recently announced it has not
used CO
gas to kill shelter animals since June and that the county commission has actually approved funds to dismantle and remove the
gas chamber.
