Still, if you have some flexibility with your bookings and if you're planing to book a premium
cabin, it may be worth connecting via LAX before traveling
on to Hong Kong to make sure you earn the
bonus miles.

The number of
bonus miles you can earn depends
on what
cabin you're booked into but the good news is that it appears that all fare classes will earn some sort of
bonus.
This means you're essentially getting a
bonus business class flight from Hong Kong to Johannesburg (they don't have a first class
cabin on this flight).
Business Class flights
on all the OneWorld and partner airlines earn redeemable miles at 100 % of miles flown + a 25 %
cabin bonus
Platinum and Executive Platinum members earn 100 %
bonus miles
on their base miles along with
cabin upgrades, guaranteed seating, and lounge access.
Once again this is a fare that allows you to fly in some best Business Class
cabins that Qatar Airways offers (the A350 and the 787) so that's an added
bonus on top of the good Business Class fare.
But United will also give you up to 3,000
bonus miles
on longer segments (3,000 + miles) in premium
cabins, or fewer miles
on shorter segments / economy class, up to a maximum of 50,000
bonus miles.
Although American has a promotion to earn
bonus EQM
on premium
cabin flights, these need to be AA flights (you don't have to register; it's automatic).
