Methane, the carbon - hydrogen compound that is the main component of natural gas and cow flatulence, gets trapped inside crystalline
cages of frozen water in the muddy ocean bottom.
The methane release happens because the gas is freed from melting hydrates — an icy substance found below the ocean floor, containing methane in
a cage of frozen water.
