The incident infrared radiation was measures by a pyrgeometer mounted on the ship, and the emission from the sea surface was
calculated from the Stefan - Boltzmann equation using the
skin temperature measurements of the M - AERI.
Removing this effect from Figure 2 (ie removing some of the hypothetical
skin minus bulk
temperature differences due to windy, cloudy conditions) would increase the
calculated gradient further.
We can't
calculate some of these fluxes accurately (especially convection), so we run the risk of spouting meaningless gibberish don't base reasoning on the MEASURED
temperature of the
skin layer (from its infrared emission).
