Researchers knew at the time that tumors can induce normal endothelial cells to form new blood vessels, a process
called angiogenesis.
When a new vessel is needed, the endothelial cells direct the process by allowing the recruitment of blood cells required for neovascularization, commonly
called angiogenesis.
But the cancer's fast growth makes it a good candidate for tumor - shrinking compounds
called angiogenesis inhibitors.
This process,
called angiogenesis, is well understood and has already led to clinical application 10 years ago.
The formation of new blood vessels,
called angiogenesis, is therefore a possible target for cancer therapy.
Results from recent clinical trials and studies in animals suggest that a class of anti-cancer drugs
called angiogenesis inhibitors may be able to temporarily reduce interstitial pressure and improve the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
