This visit, as well as Louis's friendship with Kenneth Noland, spawned an exploration of different techniques of paint application, a style that would later be
called Color Field Painting.
His position as a so -
called color field painter was difficult to dispute.
Kenneth Noland, who painted some of the great emblems of the postwar American abstract style
called Color Field painting, died Tuesday at his home in Port Clyde, Me.
And I think there is a tremendous distinction between this kind of internalized abstraction and what Greenberg
called color field painting, which is nothing but color design on a flat plane.

The premise is pretty simple —

called it Post-Painterly Abstraction.
Some of the new styles and movements that appeared in the early 1960s as responses to abstract expressionism were
called: Washington
Color School, Hard - edge painting, Geometric abstraction, Minimalism, and
Color Field.
Along with John Hoyland, Walter Darby Bannard, Larry Zox, Ronald Davis, Ronnie Landfield, John Seery, Pat Lipsky, Dan Christensen [29] and several other young painters a new movement that related to
Color Field painting began to form; eventually
called Lyrical Abstraction.
Sometime in 1940 Rothko makes his last figurative painting, then experiments with Surrealism, and eventually does away entirely with any figural suggestion in his paintings, abstracting them further and paring them down to indeterminate shapes floating in
fields of
color - Multiforms as they were
called by others - which were greatly influenced by Milton Avery's style of painting.
Taking issue with Harold Rosenberg (another important champion of Abstract Expressionism), who wrote of the virtues of action painting in his article «American Action Painters» published in the December 1952 issue of ARTnews, [3] Greenberg observed another tendency toward all - over

Each artist in this exhibition demonstrates a knowledge of painting history from Apfelbaum's references to Robert Motherwell with appropriation of
color fields and signifiers, to Sparks use of continually morphing organic shapes that

He then eliminated pictorial depth for a

Tobey is most notable for his creation of so -

Ray Parker was an influential art teacher and an important

Although the so -
called color -
field painters focused on the sublime and contemplative qualities of
color (think of Rothko's rectangular floating forms) they had a lot more in common with the spontaneous gestures of the action - painters than had previously been realised.
The exhibition also seeks to obliterate the ease with which the Abstract Expressionists have been categorised into two main groups, the
color -
field painters such as Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthalter and the so -
called «action - painters» of Pollock and de Kooning fame.
His sophisticated layerings of varied materials
call to mind the broad expanses of
color field painting while creating a tangible experience of texture, movement and spatial depth.
Shaffer uses a shifting figure / ground relationship
calling to mind the flow of energy in, out and through us, depicting women enveloped within
fields of gestural DNA - like marks or packed with radiating
color strokes like bursts of energy set against darker voids.
The larger of the two «painterly» works is Number 38S, an eight - foot - square
field of wooden sticks, detritus from some explosion or collapse, scattered over 16 dirt -
colored (or covered) wooden panels that combine into what The New York Times art critic Roberta Smith
called «an endless catastrophe seen from above.»
Color fields and forms are negotiated intuitively, responsive to what I like to
call a painterly logic that is unique to each painting.
The show opens with one of most incredible rooms of postwar painting I have seen in a New York gallery in recent years: two huge, pitch - perfect Clyfford Stills, Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis
color fields and a breathtaking 18 - foot - long painting by Barnett Newman
called Uriel (1955), an expanse of mint green separated from a slice of chocolate by the thinnest of white and black zips.

Her paintings evoke what she
calls «
color desire,» as the fluidity of the forms engage us in seeking
color resolutions across the pictorial
field, while drawing us to the different spaces that the
colors occupy and the ways they attract and repel each other.

To my mind, Hirst's Spot Paintings are no different in their engagement with art history, as these pulsating canvases of
