In a 2008 paper in Science, Parkin and colleagues demonstrated the beginnings of a racetrack memory based not on skyrmions, but on magnetic features
called domain walls, which separate regions with different directions of
magnetization in a material.
The researchers detect the
magnetization from atomically thin materials using a technique
called magneto - optic Kerr effect.
At the interface where domains of different
magnetization direction meet, the
magnetization has to rotate from one direction to another in a so -
called domain wall.
