Over the last week, we've reported
on a series of announcements from pledges to offer smaller
packages and clear
calorie labelling to calls for the UK soft drinks levy to be extended to confectionery.
While tobacco
packaging regulation is quite strict, the best practices
on labelling for most food and non-alcoholic drinks include flagging any coloured dies, allergens,
calorie content, ingredients and the use of genetically modified ingredients.

Set limits
on fats: total fat must be less than or equal to 35 % of
calories; saturated fat must be less than or equal to 10 % of
calories per portion as
packaged; and trans fat must be 0g as stated
on the
label.
The only problem, industry representatives say, is that current federal rules
on such products require prominent «reduced
calorie»
labeling on the front of the
package, which is «not attractive to children» and contributes to an «overall decline in milk consumption.»
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it would update guidelines for nutritional
labels on packaged food and beverages to include information
on added sugar and to prominently display
calorie count and servings.
