Most newer model cars have an adjuster in the cylinder head that can

This system

timing so that it allows exhaust gas to remain in the cylinder during the inlet stroke.

change the
cam, you'd better be really careful; if you add too much valve lift and / or alter valve
timing too much, it's possible for a valve to collide (catastrophically) with the top of the piston.
The only
time I've ever come across a tundra 5.7 that needed a new chain, was when someone neglected oil
changes for 2 yrs, and drove it until the oil caked up and sludge had built up so bad, which snapped the
cam chain, but even then the
timing chain was still in tact.
