It's hard not to in the current climate; many
candidates wouldn't
get on the
ballot if they didn't claim adherence to the superstition.
I don't know what church you've been going to, but my minister goes to great pains before an election to not mention ANY
candidate or particular
ballot issue, but instead call
on the congregation to read their scriptures (suggesting some references) and pray, pray, pray for God's guidance, as they
get ready to cast their vote.

candidates have warts and bad days), then I would be all for drafting him or Bobby Jindal.
Through personal involvement in many NY political campaigns over the past 25 years, I can tell you that
getting on the
ballot in NY is no easy task for outsiders (i.e.,
candidates not backed by a party).
But they didn't love the idea of losing control over who
gets to run
on their
ballot line, which they — through gubernatorial
candidate Howie Hawkins — worked so hard to secure in the 2010 campaign.
Not surprisingly, state Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long is not at all pleased with the talk in Albany these days of going away with so - called fusion voting by repealing or amending the Wilson - Pakula statute that requires
candidates who aren't enrolled in a particular party to
get permission from that party's leaders to run
on their
ballot line.
All that said, the best way for you to find out exactly what it takes to
get on the primary
ballot is to: (1) hire a good election law attorney, or (2) contact the Suffolk County Board of Elections and ask them to provide you with the rules for
ballot access,
candidate qualifications (such as residency requirements in the district), deadline dates, and filing fees.
GOP gubernatorial nominee Carl Paladino is trying to embarrass his Democratic opponent, Andrew Cuomo, into a freewheeling debate that, in the Buffalo businessman's opinion, should include every single
candidate who
got on the
ballot — from the Anti-Prohibition Party Manhattan Madam to the Freedom Party's Charles Barron.
There is no such thing as an «official» announcement; the only official ways to be a
candidate are to
get enough votes at a convention or signatures
on a petition, and accept them in order to be
on the
ballot.
That leaves three months for
candidates to gather signatures,
get on the
ballot, and actually campaign before the late June congressional primary (which may be separate from the state legislative primary, another travesty).
«I want to be very clear
on this: Because we've had five
candidates who have, over the year, worked hard to
get substantial support throughout the state committee and have that support, I am going to allow a two
ballot process which will end up letting all five
on the
ballot,» Jacobs told me this morning.
The issue of potential rules changes to help Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy
get on the
ballot at the state GOP convention next month reportedly did not come up at last week's Ft. Orange Club meeting, but the topic of the order in which
candidates will be nominated was broached.
He's convinced this plan was, as he put it, «born
on the floor of the (GOP) convention to punish or
get even with the Conservative Party» for holding its convention first, tapping Rick Lazio as its gubernatorial
candidate and helping him to block Cox's preferred
candidate, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, from

ballot.

getting a new name

Lazio was the only
candidate to
get onto the
ballot at the convention, but Carl Paladino went
on to cream him in the GOP primary and he «ran» for a Bronx judgeship to
get off the Conservative line and cede it to the businessman from Buffalo.
According to Barron, his supporters collected names in every one of the state's 29 congressional districts and passed the 100 - name limit in 23 of those (the requirement is at least 100 in 15 districts, so
candidates can't just stand
on a single busy street corner in NYC and
get onto the
ballot).
