The first thing we did was just to try to make a best guess on where all of our money was going — we tried to list out literally everything, from the
big house and
car payments to smaller things like
buying makeup, shampoo, cleaning supplies, gas, etc etc..
While a so - so credit score may not seem like a
big deal, it could cost you thousands of dollars if you need a loan to
buy a
house or finance a
car.
If their
car gets better mileage they drive further, if it costs less for HVAC they
buy a
bigger house, etc..
In the end you have more fuel efficient
cars plus cheap gas which encourages suburban sprawl because people can afford to commute long distances, so then you end up with people
buying bigger houses (which use more energy) further out into the ever expanding suburbs.
I know about the report to LBJ from the Presidential Science Advisory Committee in 1965 (and its Appendix Y4) and the 1958 booklet from the NAS that talked about CO2 and water vapor being greenhouse gases, but it's never been clear to me exactly when it would be reasonable to say that the evidence was not just strong enough but also widely accepted enough by scientists that the rest of us should have taken notice and done something other than
buy more
cars and
bigger houses.
This isn't such a
big deal for large infrequent purchases, like maybe
buying a
car or a
house.
Paying off your mortgage may not make you as much money as investing them money elsewhere, but neither does
buying a fancy
car or a
house that is too
big, or taking vacations to Hawaii, and isn't that what the gurus tell us we should do with all the money we make in real estate anyway?
