Our
flight was
on time, we checked the
car seat with no problem (Ed note: rookie mistake) and gate - checked the stroller.
For a 7 hour
flight I would definitely consider getting a
seat for your son and bringing
on board his
car seat.
We hung
on to the baby's
car seat in case there was room
on the
flight.
My experience with paying for my daughter to have her own
seat / taking her
car seat on board to use during
flight has been mixed, but never had any issues like this one, wow!
Luckily, both
flights weren't full and we were flying Southwest, so we were able to gate - check the complete folded stroller, and brought Bub
on board in his
car seat (with adapter attached — made no difference in installing the
seat).
Never mind the general public... Some examples: 1) the passenger in front of us
on our first
flight, whom when my daughter was crying while we waited to take off and I said something aloud such as «I'll nurse her once we take off and then she'll be quiet», had to tell everyone around us that she was a nurse and that I was essentially a bad mom to not nurse my baby during takeoff (sorry lady, but the reason I bought her a
seat was for her to be in her
car seat during takeoff as it's much safer than in my arms nursing).

Sadly, many
flight crews are not well - versed
on the proper usage of
car seats on planes, nor the FAA requirements around their correct usage.
We had no difficulty finding a
seat, and the
flight attendant at the gate was able to tell us if the
flight was full so we could bring our
car seat on (if you're bringing yours).

flights too so you can take two large items like your
car seat, stroller or travel cot.
When my son was 18 months old, we traveled

seat in front of him with his feet.

car seat with traveling and know that it means sitting in one place — it is also especially useful
on long - haul
flights if your child is used to sleeping in their
car seat.
If you are worried about an altercation with the
flight attendant or the gate staff allowing you to bring your
car seat on board, take with you a printed letter that clearly states that your
car seat is approved.
For your next
flight, bring your
car seat on board if desired but focus mainly
on keeping your children safe in the
car.
I note each screaming baby I've ever seen
on a
flight is kept in
car seats and not held by parents, not given much attention other than shoving something into their mouth (a pacifier, a bottle).
If you're flying to meet family and your baby is small enough to stay
on your lap during the
flight, perhaps you can order a
car seat online and have your family install it in their
car before they pick you up from the airport.
First of all, given the age of your middle child, I would consider bringing a
car seat for that child
on the plane because 2 1/2 is a difficult age to control and keep still
on a long
flight.
