I'm still a big fan
of Starpoints and I
use my Amex SPG Credit
cards to collect the
currency wherever I can't earn a category bonus with one
of my other

card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees is often not enough to make sure you're not paying more than you should be when making purchases abroad — I'm referring specifically to the practice
of «dynamic

One

With that in mind, even if I thought there was no risk
of an AAdvantage devaluation, I wouldn't
use my Aviator
card for spending — I may not be earning a
currency that's going to lose value but I would still be earning a
currency I can't really

cards I've listed above earn transferable
currencies (they can be moved to a number
of other loyalty programs) while the points earned thought the Marriott Rewards credit
card are really only
of any
use at Marriott properties....
so had I
used this
card to pay in a foreign
currency I would have incurred a fee
of 2.7 %.
Using a credit
card for foreign public transport is sooooo much easier than holding up a line
of annoyed locals behind you as you fumble around with whatever unfamiliar foreign
currency you're dealing with and trying to figure out exactly how much is needed while trying to remember how to say «sorry» in Romanian... etc. (not that I would know what that's like
of course).
Even if the gift
card never gets
used the Membership Rewards points are still being purchased at a very good price... even with my conservative valuation
of Amex's
currency.
If we assume that Amex, Chase and Citi
currencies are all worth around 1.5 cents each (not a generous valuation at all) you could earn at least 4.5 cents / $ for spending in most
of those categories
using better credit
cards — that's 3 times the earnings that you'd be getting from the Virgin Atlantic credit
card.
Point: A
currency used by credit
cards and some airlines in the place
of miles.
It's really important to research beforehand what kind
of fees you might be up against and I recommend always having the local
currency on hand to cover the fees, as sometimes the fees can process as a cash advance if you
use a credit
card.

of the oneworld travel alliance, cardholders are entitled to redeem their «Avios,» the global rewards
currency used by this
