So those of us who
care about legal writing naturally took notice when the second edition of The Solicitor General's Style Guide: Second Edition dropped on October 3, 2015 and became Amazon's # 1 new release in legal writing.
And it was only a matter of time before people who
care about legal writing would find an excuse to bicker over something in the guide on Twitter.

So, although I thought hard
about what to
write about in this commemorative essay, I chose the tributes to Tom Blackwell, again, as a symbol of the
caring, close, and proud community of
legal writing professionals that was proud to call Tom a colleague and friend.

Remember how you learned in
legal writing 101 that the judge did not
care what you personally thought and only
cared about what cases and statutes said?
Would I
care most
about their experience as an attorney, experience and results handling similar types of cases, firm's reputation in the
legal community, do they teach other lawyers that area of law, other achievements, perhaps
writing relevant articles or «the book» in the field of law?
Finally, Laurie Penny
wrote a brilliant article in the New Statesman calling for everyone who
cares about justice to start fighting back against
legal aid cuts.
He is a past president of the Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and has spoken and
written about the federal criminal justice system,
about health
care fraud and abuse, and
about other
legal matters.
The reason I am
writing about this is that while ordinary litigants, who go to court to assert or defend their own
legal rights and interests, are perfectly entitled not to
care about what the public knows
about their cases, it seems to me that public interest litigants, who ostensibly pursue matters not on their own behalf but on that of the public at large or at least of some section of the public, are, in my view, in a different position.
While that objective seems clear enough, it may not be so clear why the Performance Standards are something that
legal practitioners like many of the authors should
care about enough to
write a book like the Guidebook?
