In the U.S., one in five Medicare
patients is readmitted to a hospital each year at an estimated cost
of $ 17.5 billion annually.i To reduce this impact, the Affordable
Care Act (ACA) has introduced hospital penalties based on readmissions conditions that commonly affect
patients aged 65 and older — including acute myocardial infarction, congestive
heart failure and pneumonia.i
I chose cardiology, and specifically
heart failure, because I wanted to work in a subspecialty where I could

However, the researchers determined that since most health
care demands
of heart failure patients occur early after diagnosis and most cancers were diagnosed after 1.5 years, this detection bias was not a major reason for more instances
of cancer diagnosis in
heart failure patients.
For example, twice as many
patients treated with standard
care therapies had worsening
heart failure requiring new intravenous therapies, doubling
of their diuretic dose or mechanical support, compared to those treated with serelaxin.
«If
patients know they have received a drug treatment that might increase their risk
of heart failure, it's even more important to take
care of the aspects
of their life that they can control to reduce their risk as much as possible and to work with their medical
care team to detect issues as early as possible,» Larsen said.
