In the notable
case on assisted suicide in Oregon (Gonzales v. Oregon, 2006), Nino invoked the
moral logic of the Hippocratic oath: that there was a rightful
purpose in the medical art and the use of drugs; that the
purpose was to secure the health of the patient, not to speed him to his death.
Duranty's
morals are neatly summed up in one of his 1935 dispatches: «It may be objected that the vivisection of living animals is a sad and dreadful thing, and it is true that the lot of [those] who have opposed the Soviet experiment is not a happy one,» but «in both
cases, the suffering inflicted is done with a noble
purpose.»
Arguments of expediency aside, the underlying issue is that the Magisterial power to pronounce authoritatively on matters of faith and - in this
case more especially -
morals is intrinsic to the
purpose of the Church.

moral support — sharing photos with a lot more people (before digital cameras I did not take photographs since it was too expensive)-- distance learning via the web (courses)-- learning about subjects of interest in more depth, especially from papers by others — learning from conferences I was unable to attend in person (through papers posted, blog posts, conference wikis, and photos on Flickr)-- more readily available consumer information — more readily available government information — learning more about basic health issues — more creative cooking since I have more access to recipes — feeling more connected to my favourite musical groups / musicians since they now have extensive websites, email notification services, and blogs — better organization of the various groups I belong to
