In 1995, in the Journal
of the American Academy
of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Susan Swedo and Henrietta Leonard reported on five
cases of a syndrome they called PITANDs — pediatric infection - triggered
autoimmune neuropsychiatric
disorders.
In
cases of immune dysregulation (
autoimmune disorders, cancer, psoriasis) it serves to balance the response, therefore decreasing the dangerous over-reaction to our own cells and tissues that is seen in many
of these conditions.
While increased incidence
of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the
autoimmune disease responsible for the majority
of cases of hypothyroidism, is part
of a larger epidemic
of autoimmune disorders, the skyrocketing rates
of thyroid cancer are likely a consequence
of over-diagnosis due to an unprecedented increase in thyroid imaging.
Autoimmune processes may affect tic onset and exacerbation in some cases: the unproven and contentious hypothesis that pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections, P.A.N.D.A.S., plays a role in the onset of tic disorders and OCD is a current focus of
