There are a number
of other great midrange and super-nice Club Carlson
hotels, but it's always worth it to compare the
cash price for the night you want to stay to the
price in points.
That's well below what's possible when redeeming Starpoints for rooms at SPG properties, since the
price for those stays is tied to
hotel category, rather than the
cash price of the room.
I decided to take a look at most
of the Waldorf
Hotels in the US and around the world and compare their
cash prices and point
prices and then compute the value received with the redemption.
Having said that, I will always check the
cash prices of the better
hotels in a city we'll be visiting just to make sure that there aren't any good deals to be had (which would make a points redemption poor value) and, if there's a chance to combine a good deal with the Citi Prestige credit card's «4th night free» benefit, then that's the way I'll go.

of the top InterContinental
Hotels because they've just shot up in
price to 60,000 points / night, IHG will allow you to use some
cash to offset your shortfall in points:

The key is that frequent flier miles (or
hotel points) can be worth a lot less or more, depending on the
cash price of the ticket.
As a general rule, you'll want to use your Choice points on
hotel nights that have high
cash prices in order to maximize the value
of your points.
As mentioned above, it's best to redeem your
hotel points when
cash prices are relatively high and point
prices are relatively low, with a goal
of getting close to one cent per point in value.
It was 16,000 Choice
Hotels points but had a
cash price of nearly $ 300 (weekend night in prime Yellowstone season).
