A key resolution for action has been for breeder legislation to require independent inspections based on enforceable Standards for the care and rehoming of breeding animals and their litters; microchipping which records the breeders» details; and
desexing prior to sale or exchange of kittens, recognizing that overbreeding of
cats is a major problem that urgently needs to be addressed.
«Urban myths» abound about breeding: many people believe a
cat or dog should have a litter before being
desexed, that it is unfair to
desex their
cat or dog, that it's cute for the children to see a litter born, or that breeding is a great way to make a few dollars.
Most of their rescue
cats and dogs will be
desexed, vet checked, microchipped in our clinic.

Where the
cat is not available or suitable for adoption and is released to a colony after
desexing, WLPA members invite members of the community to take responsibility for the feeding and costs associated with caring for unowned
cats.
Very few vets can provide discounted general medical services other than the routine health care of
cats and kittens at the time of
desexing.
Welfare rate
desexing is exclusively for homeless rescued
cats and kittens, to facilitate the early adoption of rescued
cats and kittens and for those from colonies subject to formal TNRR programs.
A surrender fee of $ 20 per kitten applies and $ 200 for
desexed cats and $ 300 for undesexed
cats applies.
The fee is waived if the surrender is from rescuers managing designated
cat colonies where colony
desexing is taking place and where the
cat can not be released.

Funds may also be used to
desex many street
cats in order to prevent more kittens being born into these already overpopulated areas.
Unsocialised
cats for return rather than rehoming are provided with microchip and vaccination at the time of
desexing and are wormed twice prior to release.
Cats are provided with detailed assessment by a vet at the time of
desexing: dental, deflea, worming, and determining fitness for release.
Early
desexing eliminates the risk of your
cat becoming pregnant, reduces the chances of her getting mammary cancer and reduces the possibility of some behavioral problems.
Veterinarians have differing views on this, but most will not
desex a mother
cat until her kittens have been weaned and mom's milk has dried up.

We
desexed 220
cats in the Darwin region for free and microchiped 100 of these

Donations will provide rescued animals, mostly
cats and kittens, with medical treatment such as emergency vet care, vaccinations and
desexing, food and accommodation until they can find loving homes.
Desexing your
cat will prevent the arrival of an unwanted litter of kittens and have a positive impact on their health and temperament.
Good rescue groups will ensure that any dogs, puppies,
cats and kittens adopted out will come vaccinated,
desexed, wormed and microchipped — all of which is included in the adoption fee.
In these situations,
cat and dog owners can opt to have their male and female pets
desexed as young as 8 - 9 weeks of age (the vet chooses anaesthetic drugs that are not as cardiovascula depressant and which do not rely as heavily upon extensive liver and kidney metabolism and excretion).
Because
cats are entirely capable of reverting to their ancestral instincts if they are removed from a «domestic» environment, all the more reason for people to be aware of the consequences of not
desexing their pets.
Another benefit of
desexing male dogs and
cats is that, done at the right time, will curb much of the natural aggression which may manifest itself as the animal matures.
