It is known that these prey animals can harbor these living
cat lungworm larva if they have injested cat feces while foraging for food.
The next most prevalent was Giardia species cysts at 8.9 %, followed by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (
the cat lungworm) at 6.2 %.

There are many types of
cat parasites — roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms,
lungworms and coccida, to name the most common.

Even the increased blood eosinophil numbers that are often seen in asthmatic
cats occur in
lungworm infections as well.
Small numbers of
lungworms usually cause no visible symptoms in
cats.
Occasionally,
lungworm larva, seen in fluid obtained from the
cat's lungs (The BALF exam; read more about that farther down), make th e diagnosis.
In
cats with respiratory symptoms, asthma or
lungworms (17 - 46 % of asthmatic
cats have higher than normal eosinophil counts).
Dogs become infected with a
lungworm (Filaroides osleri) while
cats become infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus.
The chief signs of
lungworm infections in
cats and dogs are coughing and a rise in the number of white blood cells called eosinophils.
