To make aviation fuels from biomass, PNNL researchers are crafting
catalytic zeolites with wider «lanes» to prevent molecular crashes and extend the life of catalysts designed to turn bio-oil to fuel.

This renders the
zeolite a «more than promising» material in achieving levels of
catalytic activity and selectivity comparable to enzymatic systems.
While their main goal going forward will be to continue investigating
zeolite catalytic processes on the 2D material, the scientists are interested in learning the impact of different pore sizes on the materials» ability to trap and filter gas molecules.
They chose an equally common support called
zeolite, which contains pores uniquely suited for many
catalytic reactions.

Zeolites are crystalline alumino - silicate minerals that can accommodate metal ions — metal atoms with a slight charge — for
catalytic applications.
His interests are related to catalysis in
zeolites as well as on nanostructured oxides and sulfides, focusing on bifunctional and concerted catalysis, as well as understanding the influence of the steric and chemical environment on the properties of active centers in a
catalytic site.
