They have tightened up the rebates in the «Get More»
categories of late, limiting them to perhaps $ 400 or $ 500 in

spend (to a maximum of $ 1,500 in

categories like gas stations, restaurants, or Amazon.

As I mentioned last month in my post on product changes, I recently changed one of my two US Bank Flexperks Travel Rewards cards into a US Bank Cash + card (apply in - branch only, or ask for a product change), which has no annual fee and offers 5 % cash back on up to $ 2,000 in
spending per quarter in two
categories of your choosing (and 2 % cash back in your choice of gas stations, grocery stores, or drug stores).
While that earning rate is capped at $ 1,500 in
spending per quarter, that works out to 7,500 points every four months if you max out the bonus
category spending.

The Citi Dividend Platinum Select is exceptional among these 3 cards because rather than limiting your 5 points
per dollar to $ 1,500
per calendar
quarter, it is limited to $ 6,000 in
spending ($ 300 in cash back)
per calendar year, meaning if there's a particularly lucrative bonus
category in one
quarter, you can generate all $ 300 in that
category, and throw the card into your sock drawer for the rest of the year.
This means if you're
spending on this card alone, you can earn $ 150 if you hit your sign - up bonus, up to $ 75
per quarter ($ 300 / yr) in
category bonuses, and unlimited 1 % cash - back on all other qualifying purchases.
The opportunity cost of the CSP is easy to calculate when you remove real

categories are better than the Discover it Chrome card with 2.0 percent back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs and 3 percent on gas for up to $ 2,500 of
spending per quarter.
You can earn 5.0 percent on up to $ 1,500 in
spending per quarter only, but that's still a lot of cash back
per year if you max out those
categories.
