Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a species of tricky bacteria that
cause gonorrhea, which can infect the mouth, throat, rectum, urethra, cervix, and even eyes.
Oral sex can transfer the bacteria that
cause gonorrhea from a urethra to a throat.
Like the bacteria that
cause gonorrhea, members of T. pallidum have multiple copies of the gene coding for the proteins that allow them to adhere to human cells — perhaps, as in the case of gonorrhea, these genes allow T. pallidum to alter their surface proteins in order to escape recognition by the immune system.
The bacteria that
