When sociologists look for
causes of child poverty and
juvenile delinquency, they link these problems to the incarceration
of parents and the resulting economic and emotional strains on families.
In the U.S.A., for example, there have been the 1928 National Committee for the Study
of Social Values in Motion Pictures, the decade - long Senate hearings on the role
of the media in
juvenile delinquency in the 1950s, the 1968 National Commission on the
Causes and Prevention
of Violence, and the 1972 Surgeon - General's Scientific Advisory Committee's Report on Television and Social Behaviour.
Goodman combined these two popular strands
of social commentary — a critique
of the bureaucratic society with an analysis
of juvenile delinquency — and argued that the former
caused the latter.
Single parenthood is not the only, nor even the most important,
cause of the higher rates
of school dropout, teenage pregnancy,
juvenile delinquency, or other negative outcomes we see; but it does contribute independently to these problems.
