«The global climate has now been so extensively impacted by the human -
caused buildup of greenhouse gases, that weather practically everywhere is being influenced by climate change,» White House science czar Dr. John Holdren told reporters Thursday night.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (big pdf file) and other climate - research groups have largely rejected the hypothesis that variations in the sun's behavior could have played a big role in warming since 1950 (the period in which the panel and the vast majority of climate specialists see abundant evidence that a human -
caused buildup of greenhouse gases is the main influence).
For the first time, nearly all of the caveats were gone, and there was a firm statement that «most» (meaning more than half) of the warming trend since 1950 was probably due to the human -
caused buildup of greenhouse gases.

While a strong El Niño provided a boost to global temperatures last year, the main driver
of the planet's temperature surge, as well as other climate trends, is the warming
caused by the
buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Temperature observations are sparse around the hostile continent, but scientists recently modeled the ocean current knock - on effects
of these wind changes, which have been
caused by ozone thinning and by the
buildup of greenhouse gases.
There are
of course other
causes for other changes that have occurred, including suspected asteroid impacts, changes in volcanism over the eons which can lead to the
buildup or reduction
of greenhouse gases over long time scales, etc..
As for the ethics
of all
of this, Donald A. Brown
of Pennsylvania State University argues that the world's top emitters
of greenhouse gases are morally obligated to curb carbon dioxide and similar emissions based on the level
of certainty that is already established on the impacts
of those emissions — most
of which will be in poorer places with small contributions to the human -
caused gas buildup in the atmosphere.
The first paper adds to the literature pointing to humans as the dominant
cause of warming since 1950, but also finds that the sensitivity
of the climate system to the
greenhouse -
gas buildup could be lower than some other recent studies found.
It's also important to remember that clarifying the
causes and consequences
of the last century's climate changes is just a small part
of the overall picture illuminating rising risks from the unrelenting
buildup of greenhouse gases.
The pattern
of temperature change through the layers
of the atmosphere, with warming near the surface and cooling higher up in the stratosphere, further confirms that it is the
buildup of heat - trapping
gases (also known as «
greenhouse gases») that has
caused most
of the Earth's warming over the past half century.
In the report, the panel emphasized that the significant remaining uncertainties about climate patterns over the last 2,000 years did not weaken the scientific case that the current warming trend was
caused mainly by people, through the
buildup of heat - trapping
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
