According to a new
survey report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 88 percent of registered voters have some kind of
cell phone, and of those, over half are smartphone
users.
With this in mind, three Kent State University researchers, Andrew Lepp, Ph.D., Jacob Barkley, Ph.D. and Jian Li, Ph.D., and a Kent State graduate student, Saba Salehi - Esfahani,
surveyed a random sample of 454 college students to examine how different types of
cell phone users experience daily leisure.
The
survey also found online daters going mobile: seven percent of
cell phone apps
users, or roughly three percent of all American adults, said they have used a dating app on their
phone.
In particular, many services now offer
cell phone apps that allow
users to update their profile, search the profiles of others, and find potential dates in their area using their mobile
phone.9 For the first time in our 2013
survey we asked specifically about the use of these
cell phone dating apps.
These are not exact comparisons to social networking habits on other devices, but a 2010
survey by the Pew Research Center found that 65 % of all online adults said that they were social network
users and 29 % of adults with
cell phones who reported using SNS on their
phones.
The International Telecommunications Union tells us that the US had over 40 million active
users of the mobile web, and a
survey by CTIA, The Wireless Association ® and Harris Interactive states that 78 % of teens - that ever increasingly important demographic for environmental change - have a
cell phone, and 15 % have a smart
phone with Internet access.
For example, the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS ® reports that more than 93 percent of its one million members use
cell phones, and a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
survey in 2002 found that three out of four
cell phone users talk on their
phones while driving.
The 320 Blackberry
users responding to the
survey also said they spent less time calling on their
cell phones or connecting to their e-mail account on their PDAs or laptops.
