The fact that these stem
cells express fewer metabolic genes might be one way to protect the cells from the daily grind faced by their peers, and to limit the production of metabolic byproducts that can damage DNA.

They compared Ras - transformed
cells with and without p53 and observed that those
expressing p53 were less invasive and formed
fewer focal adhesions, the molecular linkages that connect the structural scaffolding within the
cell to the extracellular matrix that surrounds the
cell.
Tumor
cells expressing p53 (left) have
fewer focal adhesions (red) and lower levels of active p130Cas (green)-- rendering them noninvasive — compared with p53 - deficient tumor
cells (right).
In the current study, Dr. Rudnicki and his team discovered that muscle stem
cells also
express the dystrophin protein, and without this protein, they produce ten-fold
fewer muscle precursor
cells, which in - turn generate
fewer functional muscle fibres.
We first considered that this could be an experimental artifact, since it is common for developmental genes to be
expressed only in a
few specific
cells, which could lead to the signals from the marks being diluted out and not detected.
Since murine NSCs already
express high levels of Sox2 [14]--[16], it was tested whether these
cells could be reprogrammed into iPS
cells by only a
few critical factors.
At one end of the hierarchy are stem
cells expressing most pluripotency genes studied and
few lineage specific genes; at the other end are fully committed
cells that have extinguished the pluripotency program, and in between there is a continuous spectrum.
Conversely,
few pro-apoptotic genes are
expressed in ES
cells (day 0; most boxes appear in green), but many are gradually induced during the differentiation process showing the exact opposite pattern from the genes involved in
cell proliferation (Figure 7).

Our collaborative effort revealed that the breast cancer stem
cells expressed far
fewer microRNAs than their more differentiated counterparts.
