Since few rivers existed on the Yucatan Peninsula, the Mayans constructed their cities near
cenotes which were their source of water.
The most important — and the largest — is
Cenote Sagrado, which still exists today.
They are in general shallow dives between 8 meters - 25 ft and 14 meters - 47 ft, there are also
deep cenotes like Pit and Angelita only for Advanced divers.
Valladolid is another good base for exploring the Yucatan Peninsula with affordable accommodation, close proximity to Chichen Itza (only 45 minutes away), and a bunch of different
freshwater cenotes nearby.
Many
cenotes offer exceptional water clarity and are at least partially exposed, allowing for swimming and diving.
