Since the beginning of 2014, though, the Australian dollar has on average been 18 per
cent below the peaks it reached in 2013, on a trade - weighted basis.
The decline has been the first major fall since mid 2003, with the Australian dollar currently about 9 per
cent below its peak (Graph 25).
Other forward indicators, including display home traffic and land sales, also remain subdued; despite rising in November, the Housing Industry Association series on commitments to build remains 21 per
cent below its peak in 2003.
There has also been some softening in the share market, particularly for technology stocks; the S&P 500 index is currently around 5 per
cent below the peak levels reached in March, and the NASDAQ is currently 21 per cent lower.
That could help Berkshire's stock price, which closed on Tuesday about 10 per
cent below its peak on Jan. 29.
In contrast, profits in the manufacturing sector have declined over the past two years and are now 6 per
cent below their peak in March 1995.
Loan approvals to investors have also risen in recent months, but remain 23 per
cent below their peak.
However, the think tank says both parties» plans would «still leave spending per pupil on 16 to 18 - year - olds in 2021 - 22 around 14 per
cent below its peak in 2011 - 12».
Not exact matches
On Thursday, the latest figures showed the ratio hit 170.4 per
cent in the final three months of 2017, just
below its historical
peak of 170.
Retail sales in February were still 1.8 per
cent below 2017
peak levels.
Currently, business investment is equivalent to around 16 per
cent of GDP — not far
below its
peak level in the past four decades — and is expected to rise a little further over the next couple of years (Graph 2).
With no NASDAQ bubble, the Australian equity market has continued to increase steadily throughout the period, and is currently still close to its
peak, contrasting to, say, the Wilshire which is nearly 30 per
cent below.
Export volumes stood 5.0 per
cent below their pre-recession
peak at the end of 2013.
The exchange rate has declined recently and is now around 9 per
cent below its mid-February
peak against the US dollar; in trade - weighted terms it has fallen by a smaller amount, as some of the fall against the US dollar has been a reflection of recent US dollar strength.
At present, the price is a little over US$ 290 per ounce, about 15 per
cent above the recent low point but about 30 per
cent below the most recent
peak of US$ 415 per ounce (Graph B1).
This remains at the higher end of outcomes over the past few years, though slightly
below the most recent
peak of 4.4 per
cent in June 2003.
In South Korea, while industrial production is now 16 per
cent above its pre-crisis
peak in September 1997, electronics production is 77 per
cent higher; excluding electronics, production is just
below pre-crisis levels.
It will be aided by the fiscal stimulus now in the pipeline, and by the recent depreciation of the $ A which, in TWI terms, is about 12 per
cent below its September 1991
peak.
After reaching a record high against the US dollar of US$ 1.293 in mid February, the euro depreciated over subsequent months and is now about 6 per
cent below its mid-February
peak (Graph 24).
In the US, the S&P 500 is about 4 per
cent below its July
peak, but the bulk of stocks in the index have fallen by significantly more than this as investors, possibly reacting to concerns that share prices are overvalued, have tended to move into the larger «blue chip» stocks.
Both the quarterly and annual rates were unchanged from the previous quarter, and the annual rate is now well
below the recent
peak of 3.3 per
cent reached in the March quarter 1996.
The change to the Fed's policy statement in late January caused the US dollar to strengthen, and the euro is currently around 2 per
cent below its early January
peak (Graph 21).
Despite rising real wages, and the weakness in activity, the unemployment rate remains steady at 8.8 per
cent, well
below its earlier
peak of 11 per
cent.
After
peaking above US$ 66 per barrel on Jan. 25, WTI has slipped nearly 12 per
cent to
below US$ 59.
The journey as a listed company has been anything but smooth; after trading above $ 6 at the start of 2005 at its
peak, Australian Vintage shares have traded
below or slightly above 40
cents per share since the end of 2008.
Powertrain vital statistics show 147kW at 7100rpm and 215Nm at 5400rpm, but out in the real world the engine doesn't deliver much sizzle
below 4500rpm, despite Renault's claims that 95 per
cent of its
peak torque hits at 3000rpm.
Still, that is well
below the 45 per
cent peak in 2005.
Responding to the unequivocal scientific evidence that preventing the worst impacts of climate change will require Parties included in the Annex I to the Convention as a group to reduce emissions in a range of 25 ---- 40 per
cent below 1990 levels by 2020 and that global emissions of greenhouse gases need to
peak in the next 10 to 15 years and be reduced to very low levels, well
below half of levels in 2000 by 2050,
Using this revised methodology, BMO economist Sal Guatieri reported recently that Canada's debt - to - gross income ratio (121 per
cent) is still well
below both the current (146 per
cent) and
peak (166 per
cent) U.S. levels.
